This week in class we are reviewing the EOG Reading and Math Practice Tests we took last week. We are also reviewing some things students can do to improve their scores. Please remind your child to do the following:
* Read every question and all of the answer choices very carefully!
* Eliminate the two answer choices that are not supported by the information they read.
* Choose the best possible answer from the choices that remain.
* Circle their answer choices in their test booklet as well as bubble the corresponding letter on their bubble sheet (most students did this on the practice tests - yay!).
* After answering every ten questions, they should pause to carefully check the answers they circled with what they bubbled on the answer sheet. This will help them keep their answers properly aligned.
* They should respond to all questions and check their answers after they complete the tests.
The state has come out with new scoring from last year for these tests. Please see the Comet Communicator sent out by the Administration this week for this information.
Below are some Test Taking Strategies. Please review these with your child as well!
BE A WISE TEST TAKER
Getting Ready For a Test:
1. Get a good night’s sleep.
2. Eat a good breakfast.
3. Do not worry and get upset.
4. Do the very best you can during the test.
5. Believe in yourself! Don’t give up!
During the test:
1. Use all of the test time. Use your time wisely.
2. Carefully read each question, passage, and/or word problem.
3. Read each answer choice before deciding on your answer.
4. Use any tool given (calculators, graph paper, scratch paper, etc.).
5. Make sure the bubble you bubble on the answer sheet is for the exact question you are answering.
6. Use all strategies you have learned.
7. Check all of your work.
8. Answer all questions.
9. Do your very best job!
10.Show all that you know.
Strategies that good readers use!
Before I read:
•Preview the selection by reading the title, looking at pictures, captions, headings or other special features
•Use prior knowledge “Do I already know anything about this topic, character, author, etc.?"
•Predict what the story will be about
•Set a purpose “Why am I reading this?”
While I am reading:
•Visualize what the text is about
•Make connections to things I know or have read
•Monitor for understanding (Summarize)
•Ask questions about the text
After I read:
•Recall
Paraphrase important information - Summarize the selection and ask myself what I know about what I read
•Evaluate
Look through the selection to determine author’s purpose and thoughts
• Respond
Draw conclusions about the text and form an opinion about what was read
Math Problem Solving Strategies
1. Read every word
2. Understand - What do I need to know?
3. Eliminate answers that you can prove make no sense
How can I SOLVE the problem?
*draw a picture
*write a number sentence (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
*find a pattern
*guess and check
*make a list
*make a table
*work backwards
